MONEY.CA Canadians are increasingly investing online

OTTAWA — Bank of Montreal says results from a survey it has commissioned show Canadians are increasingly turning to online investing. The survey, released Thursday, showed that more than one-third of Canadians either trade online or are considering it. That breaks down into 18 per cent who are active online investors, and 16 per cent who are thinking about it. Of those that do make investment transactions online, 62 per cent agreed they “enjoy having the control and confidence in making decisions regarding their investments.” But 33 per cent of the respondents said they have concerns about making investment decisions without adequate advice. BMO offered the suggestion of using an online brokerage as a platform for Internet investing.”Beginners and experienced investors alike require an online trading platform that is easy to use and provides access to innovative, leading-edge tools giving them everything they need to make the best investment decisions,” said Connie Stefankiewicz, president of BMO InvestorLine, an online brokerage of Bank of Montreal. For those who invest online, media was cited as the top information source by 60 per cent or respondents, followed by general web searches by 50 per cent.

 

The survey was carried out by Leger Marketing online between May 31 and June 2. The results are considered representative of the general population within 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
